The old Air Force Academy visitor center sat inside the fence and logged about 1 million visitors a year, according to the Academy's outreach division chief, as reported by SoCo Digest. Its replacement, the General Bradley and Zita Hosmer Visitor Center, opened to the public on May 16 just outside the North Gate. Getting in requires no base pass, no background check and no Real ID at a guard booth.
For anyone living a few minutes from North Gate Boulevard, this changes the familiar request from visiting relatives. The free building outside the gate is open every day, while getting onto the base itself still depends on which day it is. Planning a good visit now mostly means knowing which day your guests are in town.
The fence stayed where it was
The Academy's visitor center page says the Hosmer center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's free and has free parking. It closes on federal holidays, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and a pedestrian bridge connects it to Hotel Polaris next door.
The base behind it works the same way it did before. Anyone without a DoD ID card has to request a visitor pass online. The 10th Security Forces Squadron's Pass and Registration Office runs a background check and sends a decision by text within 24 hours. Approved visitors then go to the North or South Gate on their approved date and show a Real ID.
That 24-hour window is the planning fact that matters most. A guest who lands on Friday night and wants to see the base on Saturday morning may already be too late for anything past the visitor center. A guest who sends the request a few days ahead is in a much better spot.
What fits in an hour inside the Hosmer center
The building covers 34,000 square feet. Its exhibits follow the 47 months of cadet life from arrival to graduation. Themed galleries explain what a class crest means, let visitors listen to the Air Force and Space Force core values, and include an interactive display called the Polaris Star that walks through career paths.
SoCo Digest described the opening sequence. Visitors stand in footprints marked on the floor while a floor-to-ceiling screen plays basic training scenes, with nods to April 1, 1954, the day the Academy was founded. Daily schedules, dorm life, uniforms, athletics and Academy celebrations come next. Gift shop profits go to the Academy Athletic Association.
In the lobby, Visit Colorado Springs runs a staffed kiosk with information on attractions and businesses across El Paso, Teller and Fremont counties. Visit Colorado Springs President and CEO Doug Price told the outlet the goal is "to really help disperse visitors all over the Pikes Peak region." So the first stop can also help plan the rest of a guest's week across all three counties.
The days the gate effectively opens
Football days are when the inner layer gets easiest. In its 2026 game-day guidance, Air Force Athletics says U.S. citizens need no base pass or pre-registration for football games. Anyone over 18 still needs a U.S. government-issued ID or passport, and foreign nationals still have to register with Pass and Registration.
The athletics schedule shows four home games left this season:
| Date | Opponent | Kickoff (MT) |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday, Oct. 17 | UNLV | 1:30 p.m. |
| Saturday, Oct. 31 | UConn | 1 p.m. |
| Saturday, Nov. 14 | San José State | 5 p.m. |
| Friday, Nov. 20 | UTEP | 6 p.m. |
The Academy's own football page still lists the UTEP game on Nov. 21 and calls its schedule tentative. The athletics department's schedule is the newer of the two.
For the Oct. 3 Navy game, the department published a timeline. It's a reasonable guide for later games, but the game-day page has the final word each week:
- Parking lots and tailgating open four hours before kickoff
- The ticket office and Falcon Alley open three hours before kickoff
- Stadium gates open two hours before kickoff
- Lots 1 and 2 use the South Gate, lots 4 through 6 use the North Gate, and lot 3 can use either
- Tailgating ends two hours after the game, and all athletic facilities are cashless
Falcon Alley is free to enter. The athletics department calls this year's version, anchored by Tommy's Express Car Wash, the largest ever at Falcon Stadium, with games, inflatables, food and Air Force teams to meet. Inside, $5 hot dogs are sold all game at The Overlook concession stand on the south end of the Kucera Legacy Center. A 6-foot BobbleBird of the mascot moves to a different spot in the stadium each game.
The two late-season games are the easiest pairing for guests. Kickoffs at 5 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 6 p.m. on Nov. 20 leave a full afternoon for the Hosmer center, which closes at 5, before guests head through the gate.
Dinner across the bridge
The pedestrian bridge leads to Hotel Polaris. It opened in November 2024, and its general manager told SoCo Digest it had hosted more than 133,000 guests by June. These are the hours currently posted on the hotel's dining page, which the hotel says can change:
- Pamela's: brunch daily 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; dinner Sunday through Thursday 5 to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 4 to 10 p.m.
- The Aviator rooftop bar: closed Sunday and Monday; open Tuesday through Thursday 4 to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight
- Thunderbird Bar: Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Monday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Lovie's Market: Monday through Thursday 6 a.m. to noon, and Friday through Sunday 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A visit early in the week needs a little planning. Guests who finish the exhibits late on a Monday won't find The Aviator open, but Thunderbird Bar serves until 10.
The rest of TrueNorth Commons is still mostly plans. Dan Schnepf of Blue and Silver Development Partners told SoCo Digest that possible future tenants include senior living, medical offices, retail and food service. So far only Maverick, the gas station company, has signed a letter of intent, and he hopes new businesses will open in two to three years.
What a pass still won't show your guests
The Cadet Chapel is the building most visitors picture first, and it's still closed. The Academy's chapel page says it's closed for repairs and lists an estimated completion of 2028. According to minutes from the Academy's Board of Visitors meeting on July 20, 2026, the chapel is projected to be ready for worship on April 28, 2027. The protective structure known as the "Big White Box" is expected to start coming down in July 2027 and be gone by January 2028. The minutes list recent progress: the Protestant pews are restored, the Catholic organ is installed, and stained-glass reinstallation has begun. Guests who visit this fall or winter will still see the box.
The trail that runs through the Academy is closed too. The Academy says the New Santa Fe Regional Trail across the installation is closed until further notice. Its trail guide also says the North Gate parking lot is permanently closed and points trail users to the Edmonson Trail Head at 250 E. Woodmen Road to head north. North of the Academy, El Paso County lists trailheads at Palmer Lake, Third Street in Monument and Baptist Road, plus access points at Highway 105, Northgate Road and Ice Lake. It lists park hours as dawn to dusk.
Driving there has gotten easier. El Paso County's September project listing marks the North Gate and Struthers drainage project as substantially complete, with only punch-list work left. That's the project that cut North Gate Boulevard to one lane each way between the I-25 roundabout and Struthers starting July 6.
Holiday guests and the closure dates
Many guests arrive in late November and December, and those visits run into the same rule that shapes everything else here. The Hosmer center closes on federal holidays, which include Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. It also closes Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Thanksgiving visitors can see the exhibits Wednesday or Friday. The last home game of the season, on Friday, Nov. 20, comes the week before.
For days without a game, the Academy's visitor center page links to separate base access registrations for October and November, labeled "Inspiring Future Warfighters." The page itself doesn't list dates or hours for those windows, so check the registration links when you set up a visit rather than counting on a particular day. Outside those windows and game days, the standard online pass request and its 24-hour decision window still apply.
Hosting guests often gets people thinking about the long view: how close the North Gate feels, what the Commons might add in a few years, and what all of that means for the house you're living in.
